Mapei and sustainable development: tomorrow starts today

08/01/2024

In honour of its 85th anniversary, Mapei launched a declaration of intent in 2022: "Building a present designed for the future". Mapei is convinced that commitment and effort must start today to lay the foundations for a sustainable future for mankind and the planet.

Mapei takes this responsibility very seriously and is not content with fine words. For a long time, the company has backed up its sustainable claims with concrete data and certifications. Mapei's recent and first-ever sustainability report, which transparently details its activities in 57 countries, includes all subsidiaries worldwide and illustrates the company's ongoing environmental and social efforts, combined with solid economic performance. An initiative of which the company can be proud.

Sustainability is one of the cornerstones of Mapei's strategy as a pioneer in the construction sector. The company is making a concrete contribution to the fight against climate change by developing environmentally-friendly products with the lowest possible impact. In short, an optimisation of product development that began a long time ago.

Carbon-neutral system
Ten years ago, Mapei launched Keraflex Maxi S1 Zero, a cement-based adhesive mortar for ceramic tiles, offering complete, certified offsetting of greenhouse gas emissions. It is now one of the best-selling and most popular adhesives in the world. Mapei also guarantees full offsetting of CO2 emissions over the entire life cycle of another of its flagship products: Ultracolor Plus, a cement-based pointing mortar with an established reputation. The company also uses environmental credits to encourage the launch of renewable energy and reforestation projects. Last year, Mapei stepped up a gear by launching the first fully CO2-neutral installation system for ceramic tiles, thanks to a carbon-neutral supply chain.

Mapei is therefore working to equip most of its products with an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), enabling the company to meticulously measure the environmental impact of its products, including their contribution to global warming, the potential depletion of the ozone layer and the depletion of natural resources. The Corporate Sustainability Team in Milan is responsible for this part of the strategy.

From product to transport
In 2022, Mapei took several steps to improve the energy efficiency of its production sites, from Europe to China and the United Arab Emirates, which now generate their electricity from renewable sources thanks to the installation of photovoltaic panels. To reduce mobility-related emissions, the company has committed to electrifying its entire fleet of vehicles, and every journey is carefully scrutinised to minimise transport.

Finally, Mapei also applies sustainable principles to its employment policy, in order to guarantee healthy working conditions for its 12,000 or so employees and keep them with the company for as long as possible. The company is very demanding when it comes to the quality of its human resources management and supports various cultural, sporting and social initiatives to promote growth in the regions where it operates. Mapei is convinced that a sustainable approach also involves developing and supporting local communities with a view to a shared future.

Mapei Benelux SA is a subsidiary of the Mapei Group, a global producer and supplier of adhesives, sealants and chemical products for the construction industry.
